This week in Apple: Huge iPhone naming scheme switch-up could be on the way

Mac Rumors

The big Apple news this week is all about the names of the new iPhones. We were expecting the new iPhone names to be analogous to last year’s: iPhone XIR, iPhone XI, and iPhone XI Max. However, it looks like that won’t be the case.

We also heard rumors about triple-lens iPad cameras, Spotify and Apple playing nice together, and problems with MacBooks on airplanes. We also have a pretty good idea of when the new iPhones will launch.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest!

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

    • Apple could shift how it names the iPhone: First appearing on Twitter, and then again from a case-maker, a new rumor suggests that the new batch of iPhones will have different names than we expected. The iPhone XR successor could simply be the iPhone 11; the iPhone XS successor could be the iPhone 11 Pro; the iPhone XS Max successor could have the pretty confusing title of iPhone 11 Pro Max.
    • iOS suggests new iPhone launch date: Speaking of the next batch of iPhones, a file found in the latest beta of iOS 13 suggests we’ll see the iPhones launch on September 10. That date makes perfect sense as it’s an early Tuesday in September, which is when Apple’s launched nearly all iPhones in the past.
    • Triple-lens iPad cameras might be coming: According to Macotakara, a Japanese Apple blog, we could see an iPad with a triple rear camera setup before the end of 2019. The setup would match what we expect to appear on the next round of iPhones.
    • Apple wearables could overtake iPad and Mac: The success of the Apple Watch and the Apple AirPods could be bad news for Apple’s other lines. If sales trends continue the way they are going, Apple’s wearables could overtake both the iPad and Mac lines by the end of next year.
    • FAA bans certain MacBooks from flights: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it’s banning select MacBook Pro models from flights in the name of safety. All 15-inch MacBook Pro models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 can no longer travel on commercial flights.
    • Be careful with that Lightning cable, bro: Motherboard reports that a security researcher has developed a seemingly-legit Lightning cable that actually gives an attacker a way to remotely Touchez into your computer. Yet another reminder to always use OEM-branded accessories!
    • Spotify and Apple might actually play nice together: According to The Information, Spotify is in talks with Apple to allow “Hey Siri” commands to control Spotify. Spotify and Apple are intense competitors in the streaming music industry.
